Our commitment to reducing food waste
It is estimated that 58% of all food produced in Canada is wasted - 84% of which occurs along the supply chain.
IGA Stores of BC is committed to ensuring that none of our unsalable edible food ends up in landfills. We have partnered with FoodMesh to help us divert surplus food from our stores to local charitable organizations, to be used for meals.
The food recovery program is operational at nearly all of our stores and will be launched at the remaining stores over the coming months.
Track the impact of our food donations
Since April 2020, we have donated 227,957 meals, supported 100 local charities and helped 21 farmers.
FoodMesh is a Vancouver-based Benefit Corporation, dedicated to reducing unnecessary food waste and feeding more. They provide digital solutions that unite all elements of the food supply chain to help organizations quickly and easily divert their surplus food to the people in our communities who need it most.
